Five-Step Lawn Fertilization Program in Minnesota
Two things to be aware of is the timing of your spring leaf clean up and watering:
- The pre-emergent product that goes down will need to be watered as soon as possible to penetrate the soil. Hopefully we get some spring rains but if we don’t, having irrigation systems up and running will improve the success of the product.
- Spring Clean Up completed by May 1. This will assure that when we come to apply your first application it can be completed on time, as the pre-emergent needs to be applied at a certain ground temperature. If you use outside companies for lawn cleanups or irrigation, perhaps a friendly reminder of timing would be helpful.
Starting in early spring and running through the fall, our lawn fertilization program in Minnesota includes the following:
Spring – Slow-release fertilizer design for color and stimulate growth coming out of dormancy. A pre-emergent to control unwanted grasses. Spot spray weeds as necessary.
Early Summer – Blanket Spray weed control. Slow-release fertilizer with enzymes to help the plant take up all available nutrients.
Summer – Slow-release fertilizer, and soil amendments that help the plant on a cellular level combat the stress of the hot summer months.
Late Summer – Balance fertilizer, which promotes root development that will thicken turf. Blanket weed spray.
Fall – Nutrients that will prepare the plant for the harsh winter and encourage healthy growth in the spring. Now is the best time to spot spray for all tough weeds like Creeping Charlie and Wild Violet.
You will notice on our program we fertilize on each treatment. It’s far better for the plant and the environment to spoon feed your lawn, more often with less product, then apply high amounts of fertilizer at any one time.
Our practices reduce the chance for runoff into wetlands. We also apply the latest products in plant and soil technology. This science maximizes each nutrient we apply to the environment. It allows for a reduction in the amount of fertilizer as the plant is prepared to utilize all the natural minerals and nutrients in the soil.

Our Insecticide Program
While the key to a healthy lawn is healthy soil, good mowing, watering, and fertilizer practices, sometimes chemicals are needed to control the wrath of insects inflicting damage on your grass or garden. Sucking pests such as aphids, scales and mites have piercing mouthparts that allow them to puncture plant tissue and remove sap or cell contents. When an infestation occurs, leaves can become yellow or wilted, branches can die off, and it can stunt growth. Some insects even invoke a virus or inject toxins while feeding.
At Turf Care Inc., our insecticide program will wipe out these plant-destroying bugs saving you tons of time and money in turf and crop damage.
